Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison has urged Jurgen Klopp to play Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino in last season’s roles.
The Reds’ attacking pair were devastating in 2017/18, making up two-thirds of Europe’s most dangerous front-three, along with Sadio Mane.
Salah invariably adopted a right-sided role, while Firmino led the line in his own unique way.
This season, however, a switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation has often seen the Brazilian used as a No.10, with his Egyptian teammate tasked with playing up front.
It has clearly had success, given Liverpool’s table-topping Premier League position, but the Reds have often not clicked in the final third in the manner they did a year ago.
They were superb in that area in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth, though, on a day that saw Klopp use Salah and Firmino in last season’s positions, in a 4-3-3 system.
Speaking to Premier League Productions, Hutchison says he believes it should stay that way for the remainder of the campaign:
It was comfortable and Liverpool could have scored three or four more. Liverpool were sensational.
They were better that Mo Salah was playing off that side, he wasn’t playing as a No. 9, he was off the right-hand side up against [Diego] Rico the full-back. Firmino playing through the middle.
He’s got to play that 4-3-3, Klopp, until the end of the season. He’s got to get Mo Salah one-v-one.
