Leipzig close to signing Dayot Upamecano replacement – boost for Liverpool

Liverpool have been boosted in their attempts to sign Dayot Upamecano this summer, with RB Leipzig seemingly on the verge of signing his replacement.

There could be a scramble for the 22-year-old’s signature in the coming months, as he moves on to pastures news.

Liverpool have been continually tipped to sign the centre-back, but there are set to be others who are also keen to snap him up, including Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

According to Telefoot journalist Julien Maynard on Twitter, Leipzig are close to signing defender Mohamed Simakan from Strasbourg, paving the way for Upamecano to leave.

Liverpool definitely need a big-name centre-back to come in this summer, despite having only just brought in Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies.

Virgil van Dijk’s cruciate ligament injury means there are no certainties that he will return exactly the same player as before, while Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are too injury-prone to be relied upon week in, week out.

Upamecano would be ideal for Liverpool, with his age meaning he could be at Anfield for many years, and his quality as an all-round defender undeniable.

Not only has he completed 88.4 percent of his passes in the Bundesliga in 2020/21, but 2.4 aerial duel wins per game also shows he is dominant in that area of defending, not to mention 1.3 interceptions per match, too.
