Liverpool could sign Pedro Goncalves if they trigger €60m release clause

Liverpool have been handed a boost in their attempts to sign Sporting CP star Pedro Goncalves, with the club unable to do anything about his €60million release clause being triggered.

That’s according to Correio da Manha [via Sport Witness], with a source saying the midfielder is happy to develop at the club, “but, of course, if someone were to hit the release clause” the situation would change.

Goncalves is having a season to remember for Sporting, scoring 14 goals and registering two assists in just 16 Primeira Liga appearances.

The Portuguese was linked with a move to Liverpool earlier in the week, as Jurgen Klopp eyes up summer reinforcements.

It looks as though Liverpool’s only real hope of acquiring Goncalves’ signature could be by matching his release clause, so they will need to decide if he is worth that amount of money.

The youngster is clearly in superb form, and has lots of potential, but if funds are tight this summer, they could splash out on more proven quality.

Goncalves would be a long-term prospect, however, and his end product in 2020/21 so far suggests he could be a strong backup to the front-three, and also shine in an attacking midfield role.

The bottom line is that if Klopp and Michael Edwards feel the player is overpriced, they are unlikely to go near him.
