Liverpool fans fume at ‘lazy’ squad ahead of crucial Man Utd clash

Life moves fast in football. Just 365 days ago, the streets of Liverpool were a sea of red, thick with the scent of pyrotechnics and the weight of a second Premier League title in the modern era.

The images remain etched into the digital archives of a triumphant season: Arne Slot, the man who had seamlessly stepped into the vacuum left by a legend, caught on camera leading the revelry.

There were videos of the Dutch manager locked in a celebratory embrace with his players, a squad that looked like it had cracked the code for sustained dominance.

For a month, the party didn’t stop. From the dressing room to the city centre, it was a celebration of a team that had, quite literally, conquered all of England.

But if last year was the ultimate high, the subsequent 12 months have served as a sobering, brutal comedown. The champagne has gone flat, and the “Slot Machine” has jammed at the worst possible moment.

Fast forward to today, and the view from the AXA Training Centre is far less scenic. The swagger that defined their title-winning stroll has been replaced by the frantic, sweat-on-the-brow desperation of a side clutching at the coattails of the top five finish.

Liverpool aren’t checking the flight paths to Istanbul for a European final; they are checking and praying for a fifth-place finish. It is a staggering fall from grace. To go from kings of the country to hoping for a Champions League entry via the Premier League’s expanded quota is a reality few saw coming during those hazy days of celebration.

The cracks, perhaps ignored during the trophy parade, have become chasms. A squad that looked invincible while partying on social media now looks weary.

The high-press that smothered opponents last term has often looked more like a polite request this season, and the clinical edge that turned draws into wins has blunted significantly.

In football, you’re only as good as your next result, and the Reds have found that out the hard way. The “mentality monsters” have looked human, and the aura of invincibility has evaporated, leaving behind a team that is battling not for silverware, but for relevance.

It’s a far cry from the scenes that greeted the champions of England this time last year.

Twelve months ago, the social media clips emanating from the Liverpool camp were of a squad in the middle of a month-long bender, celebrating a second Premier League title in three years with Arne Slot leading the festivities.

Now, the digital trail has left a much more bitter taste in the mouths of a frustrated fanbase.

With an eight-day gap between the routine 3-1 win over Crystal Palace and Sunday’s high-stakes trip to Old Trafford, the Liverpool squad were granted a brief window of respite.

But for a side whose campaign has stuttered and stalled since the turn of the year, the optics of “holiday mode” have not gone down well.

Sections of the supporters, still reeling from a collapse that has seen a title defense turn into a desperate scrap for fifth, have been left enraged by videos of the squad making the most of their downtime.

One supporter was fuming by stating @NeilLfc_5: Oh where’s he then? Szaboslai is in Italy, Van Dijk is somewhere galavanting with a new haircut and that Baldy cunt of a lazy t*** will be in Dubai or Ibiza. There’s literally a month left in the season and they’re all on holidays again

CAM (@poundy88) on X: This is another reason why this manager has to go! Literally always sending them on holidays and breaks and no training! Absolute joke! If he takes us into next season and we are shit again and Xabi goes Chelsea I’m going to be fuming

Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister were among those who opted for a change of scenery, jetting off to Rome for some late-April sun and sightseeing with their young families. While the pair were back at the AXA Training Centre by Tuesday

Szoboszlai even spending his afternoon meeting fans at the LCFA pitches in Litherland alongside Milos Kerkez the damage in the court of public opinion had already been done.

Kerkez himself had a busy itinerary, popping up at The Crucible in Sheffield on Sunday to take in the Snooker World Championships.

The left-back was spotted rubbing shoulders with UFC star Paddy ‘The Baddy’ Pimblett and local musician Jamie Webster, even taking a moment to discuss his burgeoning interest in the baize.

While the jet-setters were clocking up air miles, captain Virgil van Dijk opted for a more understated approach. The Dutchman remained closer to home, later posting a series of snapshots to Instagram with the cryptic caption ‘Here and there’.

One image, a POV shot of his own mural on Coningsby Road, served as a stark reminder of his status in L4 a status that currently feels under scrutiny as the skipper attempts to steer a listing ship toward the top five.

The reality is that these were scheduled days off two days of recovery in a relentless schedule. But in the hyper-sensitive world of a Liverpool slump, every selfie in Rome or sighting at the snooker is viewed through a different lens.

For many, the sight of players enjoying the spoils of their labour while the season’s ambitions go up in smoke is a difficult pill to swallow.

The “Slot Machine” may have been reset for the final run-in, but as the squad prepares for the lions’ den of Old Trafford, the pressure to prove they haven’t checked out early has never been higher.

Kopite angered over Liverpool holidays

From within the club, the idea of allowing the players more time during a gruelling campaign is, in theory, exactly what they need. The demand of modern-day footballers is something supporters have never seen before, from a physical and mental aspect.

The opportunity to reset the batteries isn’t afforded to many teams, particularly those involved in the latter stages of the FA Cup and Champions League. The Anfield outfit has a relaxed fixture schedule by comparison; therefore, the idea for a break on one hand seems like a just solution.

On the other hand, this is viewed as a relaxed state, with the biggest game of the season on the horizon. Liverpool supporters don’t enjoy as many days in a year when they beat their bitter North West rivals Manchester United, especially when it’s played at Old Trafford.

Having the squad on holiday has not gone down well. This is more than bragging rights; this one game can define the entire season, and it feels like a slap in the face to fans who have been fed up over a season where the team looks leggy as soon as they enter the final half an hour.

Members of the fanbase took to X to vent their frustration. @poundy88 said, “This is another reason why this manager has to go! Literally always sending them on holidays and breaks with no training! Absolute joke!” While @NeilLFC_5 said, “There’s literally a month left in the season, and they’re all on holidays again.”

It’s not just the game against United that’s at stake, as the following game at Anfield, Slot’s men play yet another bitter old enemy in Chelsea, another must-win game after a 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge early this year.

Slot walking a fine line

Other fans may be in disagreement, and the whole debate is being blown massively out of proportion, but there is no denying that the Reds have been inferior to last season.

Players can take the blame for their performances, as can the board for not providing enough tools, but ultimately, Slot has a finger in the pie with this being another example.

The only team to have been outrun more than Slot’s troops this season is Chelsea. Having more possession plays a hand in that, but the team look unfit at this stage in the season, with alarm bells sounding.

Reports suggest that the Dutchman has the full backing from the board ahead of the new season, but if the team continue to be on a downward spiral, and weekly holidays commence, fan frustration could quickly turn into something far more serious.
