Liverpool have suffered an injury blow in the final game of the international break, as Jeremie Frimpong came off injured for the Netherlands.

The right-back came off the bench in the friendly against Ecuador, coming on for Cody Gakpo at halftime. He played just 13 minutes in the game, when he was forced off, and is now facing a race against time to get fit for the FA Cup clash against Manchester City.

It remains unclear why Frimpong came off, but he headed straight down the tunnel and was replaced by Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jan Paul van Hecke. The injury is his third of the season, and the Reds would be hoping that it is nothing serious.

Alisson, Mohamed Salah, and Federico Chiesa picked up injury issues earlier in March and were ruled out for their international sides.

Frimpong’s bad luck with injuries continue

Frimpong suffered a hamstring injury in October 2025, keeping him out of action for 54 days and missing 14 matches for club and country. He was back in action in mid-December, but picked up an injury a month later.

The Dutchman suffered another hamstring injury in January and missed five Liverpool matches before returning at the end of February. The injury issue is a bigger concern for Arne Slot as Conor Bradley is already ruled out for the season with a knee injury he picked up against Arsenal earlier this year.

The manager will be forced to use Dominik Szoboszlai as the right-back once again in the coming games, should the Dutchman not recover in time.

Arne Slot pointed at Frimpong’s injury for Liverpool’s poor season

Arne Slot claimed in March that Frimpong’s injury was a key reason why Liverpool were not challenging for the Premier League title this season. He claimed that the defender’s pace was missed in their attack and said:

“Jeremie has shown every time he comes in that when you face low blocks, how important pace is. I can tell you, the moment you don’t face low blocks and the moment you face teams who (line up) further away from goal, then pace becomes probably even more important.

Pace in modern football, apart from being really strong at set-pieces, is crucial. Not that I needed it because I knew it, but Paris Saint-Germain were a great example (last season) of pace when it comes to the forwards – to win the Champions League from open play and be creative.”

“We thought, I thought, that was something we could add to this team and what we’ve tried to do. But unfortunately, we’ve only been able to use one player (we signed), who has a lot of pace in our front three, and that is Hugo (Ekitike).

Alex (Isak) has been mainly injured, and Jeremie hasn’t played a lot of minutes in the Premier League. That’s why I always keep on saying that you see progress with us but what if all these players are fit? This club is in a very good place because we signed so many good players in the summer.”

Frimpong has played 26 matches for the Reds since joining from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer. He has scored two goals and assisted as many times in his 1344 minutes on the pitch.
