Liverpool had the chance to climb to fourth in the Premier League table today, but failed to beat Brighton & Hove Albion at the American Express Stadium. The Reds now sit fifth in the table, 21 points behind leaders Arsenal and six behind third-placed Manchester United.

Following the loss, Jermaine Pennant was quick to hit out at the players and Arne Slot, saying the 4-0 win over Galatasaray was a paper over the crack. He claimed that the Reds have failed to step up in the big games and posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“It’s all good beating a team 4-0, who have only won 2 away games in 10 the last years I. The UCL. But when it matters we fail to step up. Whether that’s the manager or players or both. Being out ran 27 of the 30 games is unacceptable, and that starts at the training ground.”

Robbie Fowler was also critical of the performance, saying that the players were all over the place. He had just four words to say at full time and posted on X:

“All. Over. The. Place”

Liverpool players split for the international break this weekend and will be back in action against Manchester City in the FA Cup on April 4.

Liverpool handed Ekitike boost

Hugo Ekitike, Liverpool

The 2-1 loss started off in the worst way possible for Liverpool at the American Express Stadium, as Hugo Ekitike went off injured after just eight minutes. The Frenchman was replaced by Curtis Jones, and the academy star couldn’t help the Reds come away with any points from the game.

However, Arne Slot had good news for fans after the match, saying that Ekitike was out due to a dead leg and nothing more. He said that the striker could be back in action as soon as tomorrow and said:

“Hugo, I think he could play tomorrow if you needed [him] to. It was a dead lag, as you call it here.”

Ekitike has been the key attacker for Liverpool this season, with Mohamed Salah out of form. The Reds have also been handed a boost as Alexander Isak has returned to training and could feature against PSG in April.
