Liverpool hold ‘advantage’ in race for Kylian Mbappe

Liverpool could have been handed a major advantage in the race to land Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe as uncertainty at Real Madrid comes to light in Spanish publication Sport (via Sport Witness).

The La Liga giants are have been long-heralded as the Reds’ main competition for the signature of the World Cup-winning forward, but their financial problems and questions over the future of Zinedine Zidane could bolster Liverpool’s chances of winning this particular transfer race.

Financial issues caused by the global pandemic reportedly threaten to turn Real Madrid president’s Florentino Perez’s ‘dream of singing Mbappe, into a nightmare’.

The report also pinpoints the effect on PSG, who may need to sell the 22-year-old in the summer in order to balance their books.

Liverpool, whose finances have also been affected by the pandemic, are ‘ready to compete’ for the French superstar; and the uncertainty surrounding Zidane, of whom Mbappe is believed to be a huge admirer, could hand the Premier League champions an ‘advantage‘ in the transfer race.

By contrast, Jurgen Klopp, who continues to follow the 22-year-old ‘closely’, could almost have a job for life at Anfield as things stand, given the success he has brought to the club.

READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Given the lamentable reluctance to sign a much-needed centre-back this month, talking about signing a player who would likely cost upwards of £200m seems rather pie in the sky.

However, given the magnitude of the player involved, it’s a link which is worth revisiting time and again, even if ultimately it means the Reds may have to sell one of their own superstars in order to fund the move.

As adverse as we all may be to admitting it, eventually one of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah will need to be replaced, and there aren’t many better equipped in world football than Mbappe to do just that.
