Liverpool seized the opportunity to gain some respite from their Premier League woes as the Reds delivered a vastly improved display to overcome RB Leipzig 2-0 in Hungary.
Both goals came in the second half when Mohamed Salah pounced on a misplaced pass across the Leipzig defence to open the scoring before Sadio Mane ran in behind Nordi Mukiele, who failed to clear, to cooly double the lead.
Jurgen Klopp’s side had cut a familiar figure from the outset with their high tempo pressing and sharpness of passing causing a whole end of problems for their German hosts in the neutral Puskas Arena.
Leipzig had chances early in both halves but overall Liverpool were close to their formidable best and could barely have wished for a better result to take into the second leg.
The Reds will now hope this result isn’t a false dawn as the Premier League reaches the business end with top four a minimum requirement.
