Loris Karius slammed by Besiktas manager

Loris Karius has been heavily criticised by Besiktas manager Senol Gunes after his most recent error.

The German moved to Turkey on a two-year loan deal last summer, following his Champions League final nightmare for Liverpool.

Things haven’t panned out the way Karius would have hoped, however, with Besiktas supporters turning on him because of poor form.

The under-fire goalkeeper has now felt the wrath of his own manager, as things go from bad to worse.

Karius conceded a soft goal in Besiktas’ 3-2 win over Konyaspor at the weekend, with fans jeering the mistake.

Speaking after the game, Gunes said he would drop the 25-year-old if he was able to, had fellow ‘keeper Tolga Zengin been available:

He was at fault for the goals he conceded. Karius has gone a bit stagnant, something is wrong with his electricity, motivation, enthusiasm for the game.

It has been like that since the beginning. He does not really feel a part of the team, it’s something we haven’t been able to work out and, of course, I am partly to blame for this.

Something is wrong, he has also been unlucky. [He] is talented but it hasn’t worked out and we have a problem. Let me put it this way, if I still had Tolga available I would play him.

It has been an extremely testing period for Karius, who arrived at Liverpool with such a glowing reputation in the summer of 2017.

He never once looked comfortable at Anfield, though, culminating in his performance in Kiev that single-handedly lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid.

A return home to Germany could suit him, as his loan spell in Turkey looks highly unlikely to last the full two years.
