Steve McManaman warns fans over £4.5m superstar defenders future at Liverpool

There have been many aspects of this season that will hopefully be forgotten next campaign.

The Reds kicked off the campaign as Premier League champions attempting to defend their title.

However, thing haven’t quite gone as planned for the club with them fighting for top four.

Despite the negatives of this campaign, there has been one positive that has made a huge impression.

Nat Phillips has really stepped up to the plate given the injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip.

The 24-year-old has made a huge impression on Jurgen Klopp and the squad with his performances.

Sadly though, it seems as though some feel this may be the last we see of Phillips at Anfield.

Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman was full of praise for the centre-back, yet fears he may leave in the summer.

Speaking to Premier League productions, as cited by HITC, McManaman thinks he won’t play for the club again…

“For Nat Phillips to do that, it was absolutely fantastic. There’s nothing like scoring your first goal for Liverpool. He had a wonderful game. Next year when Van Dijk’s back and Gomez’s back, there’s a good chance he’ll never play for Liverpool again. I hope he does. I love him to bits as a lad and as a footballer.”

The former Red was speaking highly of Phillips thanks to his Man of the Match performance and first goal for the club.

Despite the high praise, his comments make for a bitter read for Liverpool fans.

Given how well Phillips has played and the return of Van Dijk, Gomez, and Matip next season, he deserves to be involved.

Phillips deserves his chance at the club and next season he could be involved a lot more than previously thought.

Hopefully, McManaman is wrong in his evaluation and Phillips is here to stay.
