Michael Owen: Anfield’s nervousness can affect Liverpool’s players

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen says that Liverpool’s fans have a major role to play, starting with the game against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking after a Liverpool Legends training session ahead of the upcoming game against AC Milan Glorie, the former Reds’ striker said that the Anfield crowd can be a major positive when they’re loud, but they can be a bit of a hindrance if the crowd are nervous.

I certainly think that, if you’re in the crowd, the louder you are, the better. If someone gives the ball away and you hear a groan, that’s what you don’t need. It’ll never be any different, it was the same when I played and it’s the same now.

Owen was at Anfield when Liverpool drew with Leicester and he said that the tension in the crowd was obvious and that, from his experience as a player, he thinks that will have had an influence on the players.

I felt more of a nervousness as opposed to a great atmosphere against Leicester. I think noise is the best thing. Anfield can literally carry the team to victory when the going gets tough as it’s not easy out there sometimes. You’re in pain or you’re tired or whatever and it’s not quite going for you, you need Anfield as much as you can but it can have the adverse effect if you feel nervousness or hear groans or whatever.

Liverpool have the chance to open up a three-point lead at the top of the Premier League table when they face the Cherries at Anfield on Saturday.
