Murphy claims two Everton players would get into a Liverpool combined XI

Danny Murphy believes two Everton players would currently get into a Liverpool combined XI.

The Blues sit top of the Premier League after four matches this season, ahead of Saturday’s visit of the Reds.

It could be Liverpool’s biggest challenge in a Merseyside derby for years, with the red half of the city not experiencing defeat in the fixture for a decade.

Writing for the Daily Mail, Murphy said he believes Yerry Mina and Dominic Calvert-Lewin would get into Liverpool’s team currently:

You can chart Everton’s progress by thinking about who you would pick in a joint Liverpool-Everton XI. A couple of years ago, I picked 10 Reds and Andre Gomes, but more of Ancelotti’s players would be in contention now.

You would not leave Calvert-Lewin out of any team and at the back Yerry Mina would deserve his place based on this season’s performances. However, it is still true that Liverpool remain stronger overall which is why I fancy them on Saturday.

Without bias taking hold too much, I still don’t believe a single Everton player get into a Liverpool combined XI.

In fairness to Calvert-Lewin, his current form is superb, but he is still not at Roberto Firmino’s level. The Brazilian is simply suffering a dip at the moment, still waiting for his first Liverpool goal this season.

Mina, meanwhile, is yet to play well for a sustained period for Everton, whereas Joe Gomez – another player out of form – has been a key man for one of Europe’s best teams for a few years now.

If Everton and those players mentioned continue their current form for a few more months, and the likes of Gomez and Firmino don’t improve, I believe Murphy’s argument would have more strength to it.
