OTD: Liverpool drew 4-4 with Arsenal on a remarkable night

On this day (April 21) in 2009, Liverpool drew 4-4 with Arsenal at Anfield on a dramatic night in the Premier League title race.

The Reds went in at half time a goal down on a remarkable night in top-flight history after Andrey Arshavin fired the Gunners ahead.

But, stirred by a Rafa Benitez team talk, Fernando Torres equalised soon after the break before Yossi Benayoun put the hosts in front.

Russian forward Arshavin was like a man possessed and wasn’t to be denied as he scored twice in quick succession to seal his hat trick and put the Gunners ahead once again.

With Liverpool’s place at the summit in jeopardy, Torres stepped up to level the match with just 15 minutes remaining.

The match ball already secured, it was that man Arshavin who threatened to break Kopites hearts with a 90th-minute strike.

Remarkably there was still time for yet more drama when Israeli attacker Benayoun was braver than those around him at the back post, bringing the Reds level and earn a crucial point with just seconds left.

Benitez’s side did return to the top of the table with five games left to play, but it ultimately wasn’t to be as arch-rivals Manchester United won their games in hand and finished four points clear.
