Real Madrid join the race to sign Gini Wijnaldum from Liverpool

Real Madrid could rival Barcelona and Inter Milan in the race to sign Gini Wijnaldum, according to Corriere dello Sport [via Mundo Deportivo].

The 30-year-old is out of contract at Liverpool at the end of the season, with no extension agreed, as things stand.

Wijnaldum is still keeping his cards close to his chest, but it increasingly appears as though a fresh challenge could come his way next summer.

Barca and Inter have both been considered potential suitors for the Dutchman, but Madrid are also now believed to be interested.

Read Liverpool Verdict

Wijnaldum is a player whose brilliance for Liverpool will only be fully appreciated when he leaves.

An understated presence in one of the greatest Reds teams of all time, his industry and intelligence in midfield get the best out of those around him.

Wijnaldum has made an excellent start to the season for club and country – he has scored 13 goals in his last 20 appearances for the Netherlands – which does make you wonder if a contract extension would be the best option for Liverpool.

At 30, he isn’t getting any younger, but his fitness levels remain impressive and he still has so much to offer as a player.

The decision may ultimately lie with Wijnaldum, but Liverpool certainly shouldn’t be disappointed if he decides he wants to remain at the club.
