Reds could spend £130m in the summer

Liverpool could spend as much as £130 million this summer as the Reds aim to become title contenders, according to Liverpool Echo journalist James Pearce.

Jurgen Klopp is understood to have his eye on a number of high-profile targets in his efforts to bolster the squad, with club owners FSG set to step-up their financial backing.

Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita, mooted as potential options, are reportedly valued at around £50 million and £25 million respectively, forcing the Reds to splash the cash.

According to Pearce, Klopp is set for what will be “the biggest spending spree in the club’s history”.

“I’m not aware of any exact amount being put on Klopp’s kitty but the way that he’s been talking about competing at the top end of the market means he’s clearly aiming high,” Pearce said in a Q&A.

“There’s certainly a realisation from FSG that the squad needs strengthening with established talent. I’d expect it to be the biggest spending spree in the club’s history.

“How much? My guess would be around £120 million/£130 million but that figure would include sales.”

Indeed, the Reds’ budget could be boosted by the expected departures of Mamadou Sakho and Daniel Sturridge, who could fetch a combined £60 million.

Champions League qualification will no doubt be critical to securing their prospective targets.
