Liverpool produced one of their best performances of the season as they secured a 2-0 win against high-flying Brighton.
The Reds raced off the blocks at Anfield and broke the deadlock via an own goal from Pascal Gross as the German deflected the ball into his own net after a Florian Wirtz effort.
Alexander Isak then scored his sixth goal of the season to give Liverpool some breathing room, after which they saw off the game quite easily.
The Reds’ first goal wasn’t given to Wirtz, but it goes without saying that he played a big part in it.
And Steven Gerrard feels the German international needs to be a bit more selfish to improve his end product.
Steven Gerrard sends message to Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz
“He was excellent in the first half yesterday. Some of the passes he played were outstanding,” said Gerrard via The Overlap.
“I think there’s more to come, but you can see the talent. My message to him is: be a bit more selfish, in a good way. Reward yourself a bit more.
“He came back from the international break under a real cloud of criticism, but he’s stepped up, and his performances have been much better. He hasn’t felt sorry for himself. He’s trying to create and score for the team.”
Wirtz has had his critics so far, but Gerrard is doing god’s work as he seems to be one of his biggest supporters. Classy as ever, Stevie!
