Rodgers provides injury update

Joe Allen will miss the first few weeks of the season, while Daniel Sturridge could be back in early September, Brendan Rodgers has revealed.

Jon Flanagan could also return before the end of 2015, according to the gaffer.

Allen, who had to be subbed off in the 13th minute of the Reds’ 2-1 pre-season friendly victory over League One side Swindon Town, picked up a hamstring injury and is likely to miss up to a month.

“He’ll probably miss three to four weeks, which is disappointing. He certainly won’t be available for the weekend,” said Rodgers in his news conference, as quoted on the club’s official website.

On a more positive note, however, the Northern Irishman confirmed that the injury-plagued full-back and striker are making great strides in their respective recoveries and will be back as soon as possible.

He added: “The great news with Jon [Flanagan] is that he’s working really well and is on target to come back just before Christmas, which would be great news for the squad.”

One of our writers here at Read Liverpool, Neil V, has recently checked up on the “Scouse Cafu” and written about Flanagan’s life off the pitch here.

As for Sturridge, Rodgers said: “Daniel will hopefully be back towards the beginning of September – he’s working very hard.”

Recent rumours have been flying that Sturridge’s first game back will be Liverpool’s September 12 clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford. – but with nothing concrete coming from Rodgers, that remains speculation.

With Sturridge and Allen possibly coming back in September and Flanagan’s return lined up for the holiday season, a mid-season surge seems very likely for the Reds if everyone else in the squad can stay healthy up until then.
