Alex Song, currently on loan at West Ham United from Barcelona, has emerged as a transfer target for Brendan Rodgers according to The Telegraph and Spanish news outlet fichajes.net.
Song has been in impressive form for the Boleyn club and Sam Allardyce would like to make his move a permanent one. However despite passing up the opportunity to sign Song last summer, Liverpool are now interested in signing the Cameroon international. Any move for the defensive midfielder may coincide with the possible departure of Lucas Leiva, who has been heavily linked with Italian club Inter Milan.
Song, who has actually scored against Liverpool for Arsenal, made over 100 appearances for the Gunners. He then made a £15m move to Barcelona in the summer of 2012 and while he showed glimpses of his precise passing and touch tackling, he ultimately failed to establish himself in the almost-exclusive starting XI.
The 27-year-old then moved on loan to West Ham and has played a vital role in club’s rise this season. Recently Song announced his retirement from international duty in order to focus on rebuilding his domestic career. If Liverpool were to secure Song’s services, they would have an experienced midfielder to help shield a sometimes vulnerable Liverpool defence.
