Xherdan Shaqiri has become the latest Liverpool player to test positive for COVID-19, according to Paul Joyce of the Times on Twitter.
The Swiss FA (SFV) have confirmed that the 28-year-old will now play no part in Switzerland’s upcoming meetings with Croatia (October 7th), Spain (October 10th) and Germany (October 13th), and that he is now self-isolating.
It also means Shaqiri will be ruled out of Liverpool’s Merseyside derby clash with Everton at Goodison Park a week on Saturday, as Jurgen Klopp’s men look to bounce back from their shock 7-2 defeat at Aston Villa.
The winger is the third Reds player to test positive for COVID-19, with Thiago and Sadio Mane also suffering the same fate in the last week or so. Both remain in isolation.
Shaqiri has stayed put at Liverpool beyond the summer transfer window, despite his future looking up in the air for months.
The former Bayern Munich man will now hope to work his way back into Klopp’s plans, once his self-isolation period is over.
Shaqiri hasn’t started a Premier League since last December, when Liverpool won 2-0 at home to Watford.
