Raheem Sterling insists that he is still to master the lone striker role but is adamant he will continue to improve as Liverpool’s spearhead.
The 20 year old has been at the forefront of Liverpool’s attacking plans since being deployed by Brendan Rodgers at the head of a 3-4-3 system at Old Trafford back in December, scoring four goals since the switch.
The youngster’s most recent strike came in Tuesday’s Capital One Cup semi-final first leg against Chelsea in which Sterling evaded Nemanja Matic and Gary Cahill before firing a superb left footed strike past Thibaut Courtois in front of the Kop.
The goal showed signs that Sterling is continuing to develop in a central role and the number 31 has told the official Liverpool website that he wants to maintain his fine form at the top end of the pitch.
“It’s a role that I am learning and adapting to, but if you want to be a good player, it is something you’ve got to do, you’ve got to adapt and play in different positions.” Sterling said.
“When I get in front of goal, sometimes I can get a bit excited thinking I’ve done it all. But I just have to keep focused, and work hard to try to take my game to the next level by getting more goals and assists.”
“I want to learn as much as I can, and I’m enjoying it at the moment. It’s good for me. I have personal goals, but I don’t want to share them in case I don’t reach them. I always set myself goals and standards that I want to meet, and this season is no different.”
Sterling was speaking ahead of Liverpool’s fourth round FA Cup tie with Bolton Wanderers at Anfield on Saturday. The youngster stated that his and his teammates’ attention is fully focused on beating Neil Lennon’s side and not on the return leg of the League Cup semi-final.
“That’s the most important game now, hopefully we can get the win there, then go into next week’s game at Stamford Bridge and get the result we need.”
“We played very well against Chelsea, and were really composed. The other young lads did really well. They were comfortable on the ball and really assured. We just hope we can take this into the game on Saturday.“
