Sunderland eye permanent Coates move

Sunderland are preparing a bid to keep Sebastian Coates at the club after his loan from Liverpool draws to a close, according to North East publication The Shields Gazette.

The centre-back played a vital role in keeping the Black Cats in the Premier League, playing the final six games of the season as they got the points they needed to avoid the drop.

Coates got into the Sunderland team after former manager Gus Poyet was replaced by Dick Advocaat, and he repaid the new boss with a string of commanding performances.

With Liverpool looking to sell the Uruguayan as he enters the last year of this contract, Sunderland want to make sure they keep Coates, preferably with a reduced weekly salary.

Coates joined Liverpool from Nacional in 2011 after starring in Copa America 2011 alongside Luis Suarez. He has scored one goal for the Reds.

Highly rated at the time signing, a series of injuries have halted his progress somewhat.
