‘Walking nightmares’ – Manager tears into two Liverpool players

Liverpool have blown hot and cold during the start of the new Premier League season under Andoni Iraola.

The Reds have played out successive 2-2 draws against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, going behind on four occasions in the two games to fight back to get a point apiece.

Defensively, they have looked a bit suspect, particularly in the full-back positions.

And Norway manager Stale Solbakken, who is a Liverpool fan, has singled out Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong for criticism.

Liverpool duo slammed for defensive frailties

Kerkez hasn’t been terrible, but the Hungarian winger has made some poor decisions on both ends of the pitch, particularly in attack.

As for Frimpong, he has never been comfortable playing as a right-back in a flat back four and that has been on display a handful of times this season.

Solbakken criticised the Liverpool full-backs for the way they have fared this season and also appeared to suggest that Virgil van Dijk is past his best.

“The full-backs are a walking nightmare defensively,” said the Norway coach as relayed by Sport Witness.

“Kerkez doesn’t seem to be able to get it right, even with his old manager. Frimpong is, for me, positionally weak and better going forward than going back.

“Is Van Dijk singing the last verse? I’m not sure about that. He certainly doesn’t have the same pace anymore. I don’t think I’m in favour of them lifting the trophy at the end of the season.

“It’s a bit thin and untested. I think they should have brought in a central midfielder who could have gone straight into the team. I’m not sure about the wings.”

Solbakken has appeared to suggest Liverpool have weaknesses in every aspect of their gameplay, which isn’t ideal for Iraola.

It’s still early days, but the Spaniard needs to spearhead his side to victory against Ipswich Town later today to get the fans and pundits on his side.
