Zabaleta believes “tense” fans could derail Liverpool’s charge

Former Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta believes Liverpool’s “tense” fanbase could end up being an issue in the title race.

The Reds and City are locking horns in a fascinating battle, with the former leading the latter by a point with 10 matches remaining this season.

It is too close to call, with some of the opinion that this is finally Liverpool’s time, and others claiming City’s experience will prevail.

Reds supporters are famously desperate to get over the finish line in a title race, having not tasted league glory since 1990.

That pressure has already been discussed by Raheem Sterling, who claims it affected Liverpool back in 2013/14.

Zabaleta has echoed that sentiment, telling BBC Sport that the tension within the fanbase could swing the race in City’s favour:

When the team is not playing well, it seems the fans are a little bit tense.

That can make it difficult for the players to concentrate and play well.

Some of the Liverpool fans have been waiting for that Premier League medal.

Another key weekend awaits for both sides, with Pep Guardiola’s men visiting Bournemouth on Saturday and Liverpool taking on Everton at Goodison Park 24 hours later.
