Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has expressed his happiness following the news that Jordan Henderson has put pen to paper on a new long-term contract at Anfield.
Speaking to the Reds’ official club website, the manager explained just why tying Henderson down for the foreseeable future was such an important task for the club.
Jordan embodies entirely what it means to be a Liverpool player in this modern era of football. You can tell through his actions on and off the pitch he treats representing our badge and our shirt as a privilege. He takes nothing for granted and strives to learn and be better for his team at all times.
Henderson has been a Liverpool player for seven years now following his move from Sunderland and has established himself as one of the club’s most established players.
Klopp labelled the England international as Liverpool’s ‘General’ and was quick to lavish praise on the 28-year-old midfielder.

He carries a lot on his shoulders that people on the outside won’t see, but he embraces that responsibility and that leadership. He is our ‘General’ and I trust him completely.
But the best thing is, I think – in fact, I know – he will get even better in these coming years. And this improvement will come from a very high base already. Jordan is so important to us and we are very fortunate as a club to have this person commit to us as he has.
Henderson faces more intense competition for his place in the centre of Liverpool’s midfield this season. Naby Keita and Fabinho both arrived during the summer but Klopp evidently regards him as a vital cog in his plans despite the new arrivals.
The experienced midfielder will now look to enjoy the international break with England before returning to Liverpool ahead of their crunch clash with Tottenham Hotspur.
