Chris Sutton: Liverpool lacked leadership at West Ham

Former Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton believes that Liverpool’s repeated vulnerability from set-pieces at West Ham was due to a lack of leadership within their side.

West Ham’s equaliser in the 1-1 draw came from a well-worked set-piece and the Hammers created a few other really good chances from dead ball situations too, with Declan Rice’s miss from a free header just one example of the Reds being caught out.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live after the game, Sutton, who won the Premer League title with Blackburn in 1995, said:

The worrying thing for Liverpool is that they conceded from a set-piece, which can happen, but then they made the same mistakes twice again in the first half. It looks like they lacked a bit of leadership.

Sutton also questioned if the Reds could cope with being in a title race, whereas he had no doubts about the ability of Man City to deal with the pressure which comes with battling for top spot.

You don’t expect City to not cope with the pressure and you expect them to keep thundering on in the same way.

Liverpool will be hoping to bounce back from two consecutive draws when they face Bournemouth at home this weekend. They could go into that game in second place in the table as City will face Everton on Wednesday in a game which has been brought forward due to their involvement in the League Cup final at the end of the month.
