Kalidou Koulibaly is remaining coy about his Napoli future, amid reports of him potentially leaving in January.

The Senegalese has become one of his side’s key men, developing into one of Europe’s best centre-backs.

Liverpool have been linked with a big-money move for Koulibaly in the recent past, as have Premier League rivals Manchester United and Manchester City, but he has stayed put at Napoli.

Reports continue to suggest that he could leave in the January transfer window, however, especially with the Reds eyeing up centre-back additions in the long-term absence of Virgil van Dijk.

Speaking to Sky Sports, via the Liverpool Echo, Koulibaly failed to rule out the possibility of a fresh challenge coming his way:

I love Naples and Naples loves me, that’s the most important thing.

I always make myself available game after game, I still have three years of contract, I’m calm, the teams are looking for me but I’m still here.

I play at my level and I help this team and these people because I want to give something back to them then we’ll see what happens.

Koulibaly is an excellent defender, and someone who would make most teams in Europe stronger, but I don’t see a move to Liverpool materialising.

Like Van Dijk, the Napoli man turns 30 next year, and considering how much he would cost to sign – as much as €70million has been mooted – he wouldn’t represent a long-term addition.

I personally think it makes more sense for Liverpool to go for someone like RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano or Schalke’s Ozan Kabak, both of whom are barely out of their teens and represent the future.

The pair have both been tipped to join the Reds and a January move for either would make sense.

Do Liverpool need to sign a new centre-back in January?
