Opinion: Midtjylland Game Could Be Divock Origi’s Last Chance to Shine

Divock Origi will forever be immortalised in Liverpool folklore for his memorable goals on the biggest occasions – but are his opportunities to remain at Anfield running out?

The Belgian striker scored one of the most bizarre Merseyside derby winners in the history of the fixture, two goals on that famous European night against Barcelona and put the finishing touch on Liverpool’s sixth European Cup triumph against Tottenham in 2019.

However, his performances since that night in Madrid have left plenty to be desired, whether that be off the bench or in a rare chance from the start. Even his outing against League One Lincoln City was a difficult watch at times despite a much-changed Liverpool side running out 7-2 winners in the Carabao Cup tie in September.

With summer signing Diogo Jota sprinting past the 25-year-old in the pecking order and Takumi Minamino also knocking on the door, Origi could well be enjoying his final moments as a Liverpool player.

Despite the hectic nature of the 2020/21 campaign doing widespread damage to Klopp’s squad so far, the Belgian striker has made just five appearances all season and remarkably has only seen one minute of Premier League action.

As the Reds travel to Denmark to face FC Midtjylland on Wednesday with nothing riding on the game, Origi and other fringe players could be given their chance to show they are worthy of their place in a high-quality Liverpool squad – a chance he really needs to take.

It will be with a heavy heart should Liverpool and Origi part ways, as no matter when the day comes he will leave with legendary status given his aforementioned contributions throughout the 2018/19 season.

The Belgian clearly has lots of ability and as such has given Kopites some of the greatest moments of euphoria in living memory. However, as this Liverpool squad goes from strength to strength, Origi’s input has diminished rapidly of late and the 25-year-old is in need of a big performance sooner rather than later.

If he is in from the start tomorrow evening and fails to impress, that may just be the death knell for any hopes of a long-term Anfield future.
