Liverpool rounded off their Champions League group stage with a 1-1 draw away in Denmark against FC Midtjylland on Wednesday evening, but it was far from a straightforward affair as VAR once again played its part.
In what was a bizarre evening’s work, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp named a surprisingly strong starting lineup for what was ultimately little more than a box-ticking exercise with nothing on the game for either side.
Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in a fashion befitting the rest of the evening as he bundled home inside the first minute – in doing so the Egyptian broke Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool Champions League scoring record before going on to play the remaining 97 minutes, rather inexplicably.
VAR intervened twice as the match wore on – ruling out what seemed a perfectly legitimate Takumi Minamino winner shortly after awarding the hosts a penalty, despite the offside flag being raised in the build-up.
Ultimately, the Reds won’t spare a second thought on their mad night in Denmark, as they advance to the knockout stages.
