Xherdan Shaqiri turns down January move to Hertha Berlin

Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri has turned down a January move to Hertha Berlin, according to Sky Germany [via Sport Witness].

The 29-year-old has continued to be a fringe player for the Reds this season, making just two starts in the Premier League.

Interest has been shown in Shaqiri from Hertha this month, but he will likely stay put at Anfield until the end of the season, partly because he is reportedly ‘not in the mood for a relegation battle’ in the Bundesliga. The Berlin outfit are only two points above a relegation play-off place, with the winger already suffering the drop once in his career with Stoke three years ago.

It seems likely that Shaqiri is now entering his final few months as a Liverpool player, with an exit on the cards this summer.

The Swiss winger has been a disappointing signing overall, having arrived from Stoke in 2018, with constant injury problems limiting him to just 52 appearances for the Reds.

Shaqiri possesses undeniable quality, chipping in with eight goals and eight assists in his time at Anfield, but it makes no sense to keep hold of someone who is so often on the treatment table.

With Diogo Jota injured at the moment, however, it is important to retain the 29-year-old’s services for the time being.
