Liverpool confirm Cody Gakpo transfer stance after claims Tottenham want him

Cody Gakpo wasn’t at his best for Liverpool last season as the Reds stumbled to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League.

To be fair to him, most of the Liverpool players were underwhelming during their title defence, barring maybe Dominik Szoboszlai and Hugo Ekitike.

Gakpo, however, showed his class at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the Netherlands as he scored three goals for Ronald Koeman.

There have been suggestions that he could leave the club this summer, but now, talkSPORT have confirmed Liverpool’s stance on the Dutch international.

Liverpool have no intention of selling Cody Gakpo

Mohamed Salah’s departure has left a massive void in attack, while Federico Chiesa’s future is uncertain. Hugo Ekitike’s long-term injury weakens the Reds’ attack further, giving Andoni Iraola a massive headache.

And due to the aforementioned factors, Liverpool have no intention of selling Gakpo this summer. In fact, the plan is to add to their attack, with Victor Munoz’s arrival already aiding that cause.

Writing on talkSPORT’s transfer notebook, Alex Crook feels the Reds will not offload the 27-year-old this summer despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

“Liverpool do not plan to sell Cody Gakpo this summer,” wrote Crook.

Gakpo is among Tottenham’s list of targets, while several other clubs are also keeping tabs.

“Sources say he remains part of Liverpool’s plans. Liverpool are looking to add to their wide options, not reduce them.

“Bradley Barcola is the dream target, but PSG are saying he’s not for sale as of today.”

Common sense prevails

To put it bluntly, Liverpool need to add numbers to their squad and not sell pre-existing options, especially in attack.

Gakpo didn’t set the world alight last season, but he has been fit more often than not and has been a reliable player for the Reds since joining the club under Jurgen Klopp.

He is capable of playing out wide or up front, making him a useful squad option at the very least.

The entire Liverpool squad have a clean slate under Iraola and will look to endear themselves to the Spaniard in the weeks ahead when they return to pre-season.

Gakpo is tied down at the club until 2030, putting Liverpool in a strong position.

The bottom line is that the Reds are unwilling to entertain the prospect of offloading the Dutchman this summer. And at this point in time, their decision looks like an absolute no-brainer despite interest from Tottenham as Gakpo still has a lot of value to offer.
