As the transfer window rumbles on and rivals begin to complete some big business, Liverpool fans will be getting increasingly anxious that places are still to be filled in the Anfield squad.

Following the untimely departure of Gini Wijnaldum as a free agent, Jurgen Klopp is expected to go in search of additions this summer in order to mount a charge on the major honours once again.

Whilst many have been linked with the task of replacing the Dutchman, few have come close to fruition.

Now a fresh report from Ian Doyle in the Liverpool Echo, as cited by LFC Transfer Room on Twitter, has assessed the options and Brighton star Yves Bissouma comes out as the leading contender.

Lille midfielder Renato Sanches and Porto’s Otavio are two other names linked with the Reds – however, the report would suggest there is nothing in either deal.

Bissouma, a 24-year-old 18-cap Mali international, played 36 times in the Premier League last season and earned an average Sofascore rating of 7.07 in the process.

By comparison, Wijnaldum rated 6.78 whilst appearing in all 38 league games for the Reds.

Described as ‘exceptional’ by Gary Lineker, the all-action midfielder has earned a reputation as an impressive operator at the elite level.

Valued at £22.5million and under contract until 2023 at the American Express Community Stadium (Transfermarkt), any move for Bissouma would likely represent an expensive outlay.

Signing a midfield replacement currently isn’t, but perhaps should be viewed as a priority this summer.

Despite the strength in Thiago, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, talented youngster Curtis Jones remains relatively untested consistently at the elite level.

Other options such as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have simply proven too unreliable in terms of fitness.

Last out injured in September 2019, the Mail star would certainly seem to be a like for like replacement when it comes to availability.
