Liverpool forward completes permanent move to FC Basel following impressive loan stint

This morning it was announced by the club that academy graduate Liam Millar has left the club.

The 21-year-old has joined Swiss champions, FC Basel, on a permanent transfer, for a currently undisclosed fee.

Liverpool’s official Twitter account posted the news, wishing Millar the very best in his new endeavour…

The forward makes his move to Basel following an impressive loan stint with Charlton at the tail end of last season.

From 27 appearances in League 1, Millar managed three goals with six assists, almost helping them to the playoffs.

The Canadian international joined the Reds‘ academy back in 2016 from Fulham’s youth academy.

Much of Millar’s time at the club was spent with the U18’s and U23’s, with a great goalscoring record for both.

First-team chances were likely to be few and far between for Millar at Liverpool, hence his permanent move away.

Operating at left-wing, Millar had tough competition in front of him for a space in the club’s starting XI.

The likes of Sadio Mané and Diogo Jota already give Jurgen Klopp plenty of quality, making them hard to dislodge.

Hopefully, Millar will find his feet with the Swiss club and continue his fine domestic and international career.

With the club operating on limited finances this summer, player sales will be crucial for future signings.

Following Millar’s departure, the club is also open to allowing Divock Origi, Xherdan Shaqiri, and Harry Wilson to leave.

Liverpool will need to invest wisely to improve the quality of the depth of the squad to contend for the title next season.
