Liverpool saw the departure of Dutch midfielder Georginio WIjnaldum last month after moving to PSG.

This has left quite the void in the club’s midfield options after his importance over the last few years.

Despite Liverpool still possessing some incredible talent in that department, it is clear a replacement is needed.

A number of players have been linked such as Renato Sanches and Florian Neuhaus as an heir to Wijnaldum.

However, no concrete business has happened as of yet with Liverpool needing to acquire further funds.

With that being said, it has now been revealed just the type of target that the club is looking towards.

According to the Liverpool Echo, via Anfield Effect, both Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards are targetting a first-team starter…

The idea is that the club will aim to sign a player that can rival a place in the starting XI rather than provide depth.

It is key to remember though, that the report does not lean towards replacements for the current midfield options.

The likes of Thiago, Fabinho, and Henderson are seen as Klopp’s new three man midfield per the report.

With that being said, it is clear that Klopp and Edwards are wanting to find the right player to contend with the trio.

One of those players mentioned in the form of Renato Sanches is certainly a realistic one.

The Portuguese midfielder has grown into the hype over the last few seasons and enjoyed a fantatsic Euro 2020.

According to a previous report, Lille are looking for £30million for the 23-year-old, with Liverpool one of the four top clubs interested.

Whether anything comes of these rumours is yet to be seen but it is fair to say Sanches would certainly be the type of player to contend for a spot in the starting XI.
