Jurgen Klopp hints at ‘opportunities’ for the entire squad this season

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hinted towards increased squad rotation throughout another busy season.

The Reds’ boss has been an advocate of imparting a lesser load on elite players for sometime and could be forced to utilise the entire squad as international football comes back around during the domestic campaign.

Klopp’s side made a winning start to the 2021/22 season last weekend and will face Burnley at a packed Anfield today (Saturday, August 21).

Speaking during a pre-match press conference ahead of the lunchtime kickoff, as cited by Paul Gorst on Twitter, the German spoke of a need to rotate during the campaign.

At the moment if I think that a different line-up wins you the next game then why shouldn’t I rotate? I’m the one who always says we have too many games and we have too many games. There are too many games. There are three games for some countries in the next international break. There are too many games for the players out there so of course, it makes sense to give different players more opportunities. That’s how it is, but for that they need to have opportunity first and foremost and you need to think you can win the next game because that is our first and foremost our job to do. We have to win pretty much all the football games we play. That is the task.

Last season the players were pushed to the limits of their availability following a host of injuries to key names.

Full-back Andy Robertson and now Paris Saint-Germain ace Gini Wijnaldum, in particular, made over 50 appearances across all competitions and were perhaps overused.

Clearly, Klopp is hoping that is a situation that doesn’t arise again, but could perhaps venture into the transfer market in the closing days in order to ensure the quality within the squad is enough to rotate successfully.

matchday.
