Virals: Liverpool Sporting Director Michael Edwards ‘expected to step down’

Liverpool have been rocked this morning as sporting director Michael Edwards is reportedly expected to step down at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Regarded by many as the genius behind some of the Reds’ most impressive recent transfer business, Edwards has become as famous amongst Kopites as many of those in the limelight.

The 41-year-old’s contract will expire next summer and it’s believed that will bring an end to a five-year spell on Merseyside.

That’s according to a report from The Athletic, as cited by David Ornstein on Twitter.

The report claims that the former defender has informed the club of his ‘intention to move on’ and current assistant Julian Ward is in line to be promoted.

Albeit this current transfer window has proven to be a quiet one, Edwards’ previous masterstrokes include the signings of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Big money arrivals of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker have also come under the Englishman’s watch, although it’s perhaps been the ability to extract the maximum amount from player sales that has been most impressive.

Recouping £19million for Dominic Solanke (Independent) and £12.5million from the sale of Danny Ward (BBC) are two standout examples of Edwards’ know-how.

Whilst all good things must come to an end and the club will have a contingency plan firmly in place, the potential departure will disappoint many Kopites.

With just over one day remaining in the transfer window, could Edwards deliver one final world-class piece of business.
