Liverpool to face Red Bull Salzburg in UCL Round of 16

Liverpool will face Red Bull Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

The Reds will head to Austria before returning to Anfield in February for the second leg a fortnight later in the knockout phase.

Jurgen Klopp’s side qualified as winners from Group B – becoming the only English side to win every game at the stage in the process.

Now the reward for Klopp’s men will be a meeting with the reigning Austrian Bundesliga champions.

This is the next step on the possible road to the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg, Russia for the final on 28 May 2022.

A star-studded current crop will be hoping to make it seven times European champions and a second success under their German manager.

Elsewhere in the draw, domestic rivals Manchester City were drawn to face Villarreal, whilst Chelsea and Manchester United take on Lille and Paris Saint-Germain respectively.

Other notable ties see runners-up from the Reds’ group Atletico Madrid attempt to overcome a rampant Bayern Munich.

Things certainly could’ve been far worse for Klopp’s side.

Whilst the Austrian league leaders are packed full of threats, including heavily linked forward Karim Adeyemi, the Reds will back themselves to overpower their opponents.

This will be the third and fourth meeting between the clubs in the competition after a thrilling group stage doubleheader in 2019/20.

The clash will also see a return of Takumi Minamino, Naby Keita and Sadio Mane to former employers.

matchday.
