Everton and England number one goalkeeper Jordan Pickford heaped praise on fearless teenage debutant Rio Ngumoha as England’s World Cup preparations offered an exciting glimpse of the future.
Saturday’s unremarkable 1-0 friendly win against New Zealand in Tampa provided a moment to cherish for the Anfield talent, who became the national team’s fifth-youngest debutant.
Tuchel chose to leave the winger out of the primary 26-man squad heading to the tournament.
Five players delayed joining up with the England camp due to their involvement in European finals:
Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Eberechi Eze, and Noni Madueke represented Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League final,
Adam Wharton represented Crystal Palace in their victorious UEFA Conference League final.
Consequently, Tuchel brought along four training-group players to make up the numbers, including Ngumoha.
Training squad member Ngumoha showed some promising moments as he stepped up.
Right wingers Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke sat out the match because Tuchel gave the Arsenal contingent time off following last weekend’s Champions League final.
Long-serving England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford spoke warmly of the teenager’s impact:
“He was quality, nothing fazed him. He’s had a really good season at Liverpool and the manager gave him his debut and he showed how good he is.
All the young lads have been brilliant in training, they have moulded into the squad and helped us massively and it also shows the talent we have in the system. It is a credit to the academies and the pathway we have in English football.”
Josh King and Ethan Nwaneri, both 19, comprise the other training group players alongside 22-year-old Alex Scott. All three hope to follow Ngumoha by making their England debuts in Wednesday’s friendly against Costa Rica.
England made the 200-mile trip back to their West Palm Beach base after beating New Zealand. World Cup preparations continue at a more laidback pace there before the squad moves to Kansas City next weekend.
Pickford outlined the current atmosphere in camp, balancing hard work with recreation:
“We’re here to train but we have downtime if people want to see families or they want to go to the shops or for a meal or to play golf, like I like to do. Once we get to Kansas we know it’s game on. This 10-day block is about getting work in your legs, messages into our legs and when we get to Kansas we’ll be ready.”
Ngumoha’s first international cap rewards a breakthrough year at Anfield. He forced himself into the Liverpool first team toward the end of the season, making 29 senior appearances in total and scoring two goals.
Liverpool fans will no doubt feel thrilled to see the youngster thriving on the international stage, but the bad news for his club centers on financial ramifications.
The Reds may now have to pay Chelsea more for his signing. Ngumoha joined the Reds back in 2024 after leaving the Blues academy, a move that left the Stamford Bridge club “seething” at the time.
Pickford and Ngumoha actually faced each other earlier in the domestic campaign when Liverpool won 2-1 in the Merseyside derby at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Virgil van Dijk scored in the 100th minute of stoppage time to give Liverpool three points.
Ngumoha made a cameo appearance off the bench in that game and had his own opportunity to win the fixture for the Reds, but he failed to keep his cool in front of goal.
Chelsea will also receive 20 percent of any profit made should Liverpool sell Ngumoha at some point in his career.
This clause interests the Blues at the moment, given recent European interest. Bayern Munich registered interest in the teenager this summer, identifying him as a target to bolster their attack.
However, Liverpool has no interest in selling Ngumoha this summer. Bayern has already moved on to other targets, meaning Chelsea must wait a little longer for a major payday.
