Joao Gomes has already said who he’ll pick between Liverpool and Manchester United

In recent weeks, Joao Gomes has been linked with a move to Liverpool after his transfer to Atletico Madrid collapsed.

According to Felipe Silva of ESPN Brasil, the Reds have sought information on the Brazilian midfielder, with Manchester United also mentioned as one of the clubs interested.

Gomes’ move to Atletico Madrid broke down due to agent-club conflict and the Rojiblancos’ pursuit of Morten Hjulmand.

And with Liverpool’s interest now hitting the mainstream media, Gomes’ old comments on the Reds has emerged.

Joao Gomes a big Liverpool fan

Gomes was one of Wolves’ shining lights last season as they dropped down to the Championship after an underwhelming Premier League campaign.

He looks set to move on this summer and a move to Liverpool could well be on the agenda.

ESPN have relayed some of his old comments on Liverpool, which could come as music to the ears of the Anfield faithful.

“Liverpool are a team I’d play for. I have the greatest desire.

“Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream in football.”

Earlier this summer, Alex Crook confirmed via talkSPORT that Gomes has a price tag of around £40m, which was the fee being mooted when he was close to joining Atletico Madrid.

With Liverpool also on the lookout for midfield reinforcements, it remains to be seen if they bite at the price.

Gomes ticks a lot of boxes for Liverpool

For starters, Gomes seems like a big Liverpool fan, which always bodes well for the club.

Additionally, since his move to the Premier League, he has developed into one of the most underrated players in his position.

Gomes puts in the hard yards and does a lot of running off the ball, which could be integral to Andoni Iraola’s system.

He is a tireless worker and is a dual-winning monster, which is something Liverpool have lacked in the centre of the park in recent years.

The likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister have their own strengths, but the Brazilian would add something different to the Reds’ pre-existing options.

Over the years, Liverpool have pounced on top talents from relegated clubs, as was the case with Andy Robertson and Gini Wijnaldum under Jurgen Klopp.

And now, they find themselves in a similar situation with Gomes, who could well be an under-the-radar pick if they decide to press ahead with his signature.
