Cody Gakpo has been a key player for Liverpool in recent years and has featured across the front three at Anfield.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Dutch international is wanted by Tottenham Hotspur this summer as they aim to rebuild their squad under Roberto De Zerbi.
Gakpo enjoyed a successful 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on a personal level with three goals, although Ronald Koeman’s side were dumped out of the competition by Morocco in the Round of 32.
And now, Romano’s latest update confirms Tottenham’s interest and Liverpool’s stance in the player.
Liverpool not open to selling Cody Gakpo
With Mohamed Salah leaving the club, Liverpool are already short-staffed in attack.
Victor Munoz has officially moved to Anfield to become the first signing of the Andoni Iraola era, but the Reds need more bodied up front to compete on all fronts.
Gakpo’s availability, end product and versatility make him a key asset, so Tottenham’s interest doesn’t come as a surprise.
However, Romano confirms that Liverpool aren’t open to offloading him at this point, although he confirms that it is a story worth keeping an eye on.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said, “Keep an eye on Tottenham for Cody Gakpo. They have an interest in the player.
“Liverpool are not opening the door to an exit. At the moment, they’re not telling Gakpo he can leave or encouraging Spurs to open negotiations. At the moment, the door is closed.
“But we have to see later on in the window, in case Tottenham open talks by sending a proposal.”
Gakpo shouldn’t be sold
This is a really tricky one for the Anfield hierarchy to deal with. Gakpo is a useful option to have in the squad as he ticks a lot of boxes.
However, he isn’t an out-and-out winger with devastating pace to burn, while in terms of centre-forward options, the likes of Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike are ahead of him in the pecking order.
Ekitike’s injury, however, throws a spanner into the works of Liverpool’s transfer plans. If he were fit, it would have made sense to reluctantly part with Gakpo, that is, assuming Tottenham cough up a massive fee for him.
Now, however, the Reds are already depleted in attack and need another player or two, especially with Federico Chiesa’s future uncertain.
The best plan of action would be to retain Gakpo for another season and re-evaluate his situation.
That said, Tottenham have paid the big bucks for Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes recently, so if they repeat their trick for Gakpo, it remains to be seen how the Anfield hierarchy respond.
