Over the past 24 hours, there has been a seismic update involving Liverpool’s future under Fenway Sports Group.
In the hours that followed, Bhatia relinquished his role at QPR, which added fuel to the fire and led to a statement from FSG that talks are ongoing.
Their official statement read: “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”
And now, Sky News have confirmed that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has been approached to be part of the consortium.
Jeff Bezos approached to buy minority stake in Liverpool
With an estimated fortune of around $257bn, Bezos is the world’s fourth-richest man.
Bhatia, on the other hand, is the son-in-law of billionaire steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal and is also a respected figure in footballing circles after his time with QPR.
In an elaborate statement, Sky News confirmed that Bezos has been approached by the Bhatia-led consortium to buy a stake in Liverpool, although a source cautioned that nothing is set in stone yet.
“Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder, has been approached to join a consortium which is in talks to buy a stake in Liverpool Football Club,” wrote Mark Kleinman on Sky.
“Sky News can reveal that Mr Bezos has held discussions about joining a syndicate of investors led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of billionaire steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal.
“A source cautioned that he was not certain to proceed with an investment in Liverpool FC.
“The Amazon and Blue Origin tycoon, who also owns the Washington Post, is estimated by Forbes magazine to boast a fortune worth almost $257bn, making him the world’s fourth-richest man.
“He has reportedly explored bids in the past for the Seattle Seahawks, this year’s Super Bowl winners, and the Washington Commanders, another NFL team, although he did not proceed with either deal.
“If Mr Bezos does proceed with an investment in Liverpool, it would nevertheless represent a surprise move, despite the apparently relentless influx of American money into the top flight of English football.”
American money has dominated the Premier League in recent years and Liverpool have been open to relinquishing a minority stake in the club for a while now to put the club in a better position.
Time will tell if they succeed this time, but the wheels are certainly in motion to make it happen.
