Arne Slot matches unwanted Liverpool record after 3-2 loss to Manchester United

Liverpool’s 3-2 loss at Manchester United has seen Arne Slot match an unwanted record held by Brendan Rodgers at Anfield.

The Reds have now lost 18 matches in the 2025/26 season, matching the number of defeats suffered under Rodgers in the 2014/15 season. The Northern Irish coach was sacked a few months later, and many fans belive the club need to take a similar call on the Dutchman this season.

The Anfield side lost three of their six UEFA Champions League group-stage matches before being relegated to the UEFA Europa League. They ended up losing 6-4 to Besiktas in the playoffs straight away.

They reached the FA Cup semifinal but lost 2-1 to Aston Villa, while in the League Cup, they exited at the same stage. They were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea on aggregate, after a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Meanwhile, in the Premier League, the Reds failed to make it to the top 4 in any of the gameweeks after the first game, when they won 2-1 at home to Southampton. They suffered 12 losses in the league, including a shocking 6-1 loss on the final day at Stoke City, which was Steven Gerrard’s final league match for the Reds.

Arne Slot matching unwanted record

Liverpool’s loss to Manchester United on Sunday made it 11 losses in the league for the Reds, and they are just one away from the 2014/15 record. They face Chelsea, Aston Villa and Brentford in the final three matches of the season, and could end up breaking it.

They started the season with a loss in the Community Shield to Crystal Palace, but they started the league with five wins on the bounce. However, the dip started at the end of September with another loss to the Eagles, after which they lost three more games to Chelsea, Manchester United and Brentford.

Slot’s side have since lost to Manchester City twice, Nottingham Forest, AFC Bournemouth, Brighton & Hove Albion, Wolverhampton, and Manchester United in the league. They also have losses to Galatasaray twice, PSV, and Paris Saint-Germain twice in the UEFA Champions League this season.

The losses do not end there, as they also suffered defeats to Manchester City and Crystal Palace in the cup competitions this season.

Liverpool sticking with Arne Slot

Despite the poor form of Liverpool overall this season, reports suggest that the decision-makers are sticking with Arne Slot for next season. The Dutchman will be in the final year of his contract, after joining on a 3-year deal in 2024.

Steven Gerrard also backed the manager, saying that he still has credit in the bank because of his Premier League title win last season.
