Arsenal legend admits Liverpool were denied ‘blatant penalty’ last night

The penalty incident involving Alexander Isak and Jurrien Timber has generated a lot of chatter after Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat against Arsenal.

Kai Havertz scored the solitary goal of the game in the first half, after which the Reds felt like they should have had a spot kick.

Bradley Barcola played a brilliant cross into the box and Isak’s shirt was tugged by Timber, which clearly prevented him from getting to the ball.

After the game, both Andoni Iraola and Virgil van Dijk felt Liverpool should have had a penalty.

And now, two Premier League legends have had their say on the matter: Freddie Ljungberg and Peter Schmeichel.

Liverpool told they were ‘cheated’ vs Arsenal

“That one is clear, they missed that the refereeing team,” Ljungberg said via Viaplay.

“I thought sometimes the ref made very strange decisions. I thought he was quite poor in his refereeing. But that, with VAR, that can’t be missed. It’s a blatant penalty.”

Schmeichel went one step further, claiming that Liverpool were ‘cheated’ after such a blatant penalty wasn’t awarded.

“Why do we have to talk about it? Why don’t they see it? We see it in real time, like 70 yards away,” said the Manchester United icon.

“Why can’t they see it? I think Liverpool got cheated, especially on the Isak one.”

Coming from an Arsenal legend and someone like Schmeichel – who clearly isn’t fond of Liverpool due to his prior affiliation with Manchester United – this is about as strong as it gets.
