Liverpool secured a hard-fought 2-1 win against Atletico Madrid to win their first game of the UEFA Champions League group phase.
The game also marked Andoni Iraola’s first game in the competition as the Spaniard marked the occasion with a landmark result.
Marcos Llorente broke the deadlock for the LaLiga side, but goals from Dom Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister ensured Liverpool completed the comeback.
And Iraola feels he got his tactics wrong in the first half as he didn’t expect Atleti to line up with five at the back.
Andoni Iraola admits Liverpool error
“I have to take the blame from the beginning,” said Iraola after the game.
“Atletico played a little bit differently; we expected something different. After half-time, we played a better game. In the second half we were the better team.”
“I take some blame, I take some responsibility because you prepare for a lot of things.
“I didn’t expect a back five because they haven’t done it this season. It cost us a little bit; we had to correct it.
“We are a new team. Everyone needs to know what to do when these things happen. It’s also valuable.”
Liverpool looked a lot better in the second and dominated proceedings as they scored the winner and saw off the game quite easily.
