Cech interests Liverpool // Rodgers faces Lucas Conundrum

The Times are reporting that Liverpool are considering a move for Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech in the summer, but that may prove difficult as the Czech stopper would prefer to stay in London.

Rodgers acknowledged the Reds’ need for a goalkeeper given Simon Mignolet’s struggles and Brad Jones’ injuries: “I think we need a goalkeeper of some sort,” said the Northern Irishman. “It’s just depending on how long Brad Jones is going to be out. We need to assess and look at that. We have got two young inexperienced keepers behind Simon who is only just back in the team.”

Victor Valdes – who Liverpool had been monitoring – signed an 18-month deal with Premier League rivals Manchester United this week, and with Chelsea’s reluctance to part ways with Petr Cech in January, recruiting a well-scouted, experienced goalkeeper of the highest quality may not be feasible in this window.

Also, Inter Milan’s interest in Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has intensified – according to The Times – and manager Brendan Rodgers faces a difficult decision as to whether to allow the want-away midfielder to leave.

Read Liverpool reported earlier today that the 28-year-old was ready to end his seven-and-a-half year tenure on Merseyside.

Having already recruited Xherdan Shaqiri – who was a target for Liverpool – Inter boss Roberto Mancini is now hopeful that the Brazilian will make a switch to the San Siro.

With L.A Galaxy-bound Steven Gerrard only starting a fraction of games, and Joe Allen missing with a knee problem, the lack of depth in Liverpool’s midfield is evident, and the departure of Lucas Leiva would force Rodgers into bringing in a replacement this month.
