Liverpool make big decision on Virgil van Dijk’s future

Virgil van Dijk’s current Liverpool deal runs out at the end of the 2026-27 season.

The Dutch international has played every Premier League and UEFA Champions League game this season and is also a key player for the national team.

Van Dijk last signed an extension two summers ago along with Mohamed Salah, although the Egyptian departed the club for free earlier this year.

And now, if reports from England are to be believed, Liverpool have decided to give their captain a new contract.

Liverpool want Virgil van Dijk to stay

TEAMtalk report that the 35-year-old is set to be offered another extension by the club after his strong start to life under Andoni Iraola.

An excerpt from the article reads: “Liverpool are considering a new contract for Virgil van Dijk, with the club keen to retain their captain beyond the end of the season when his current deal expires, and with the future of two other members of the defence also up for debate over the coming months, TEAMtalk understands.

“Van Dijk, who is 35, has continued to play a central role for Liverpool this season, featuring for every minute of every Premier League game so far.

“His standards on and off the pitch have impressed Andoni Iraola, who is happy with what the Dutchman brings to the side.

“TEAMtalk understands that Liverpool are open to discussing an extension, with a 12-month deal and options attached among the structures being considered.”

Van Dijk is ageing like fine wine and hasn’t shown too many signs of not being good enough for the elite level, so it makes sense to offer him another renewal.
