‘Close doors’ – Fabrizio Romano confirms late Liverpool transfer twist

Liverpool fans have finally got the signing they’ve all wanted as Bradley Barcola’s arrival has officially been confirmed.

It remains to be seen if they add more players to their squad before the deadline, with Yankuba Minteh and Ismaila Sarr heavily linked with the club.

Cody Gakpo, on the other hand, was wanted by Tottenham earlier in the summer but recently agreed terms to join Manchester City.

Various sources confirmed that Liverpool could sell for £85m if they find a suitable replacement.

But now, Fabrizio Romano has appeared to suggest that the Reds could well retain the Dutch international.

Cody Gakpo could stay at Liverpool

The Italian wrote on X: “Liverpool informed Cody Gakpo’s camp they would be ready to keep him at the club if there’s no replacement.

“All depends on Ismaila Sarr situation. Gakpo had agreed terms with City on Saturday but would also be happy to stay at Liverpool if club decide to close doors.”

It’s late in the window, but we can’t fault Liverpool’s logic here. If they sign their desired replacement – be it Sarr, Minteh or anyone else – then it makes sense to offload Gakpo at that price.

However, they don’t want to sell the Dutchman just for the sake of it and leave themselves short in attack with a substandard replacement.

With just under 36 hours to go until the transfer window slams shut, this transfer saga could yet have another twist as there are a lot of moving parts involved.
