Liverpool are pondering a move for 18-year-old Birmingham City winger Demarai Gray as an alternative to West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino.
The Mirror claim that the Reds – along with Tottenham Hotspur – will shy away from the £20m fee that the Baggies are demanding for their top scorer, and that both clubs will focus on Gray who, since debuting at St. Andrews in October 2013, has scored five goals in 30 appearances.
Championship leaders Bournemouth have already had a £2m bid for the England Under-19 international declined, as the Blues are unlikely to accept less than £5m.
The versatile teenager – who emerged through the academy at the West Midlands club – has also sparked interest from Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton, as well as Arsenal and Newcastle United.
Brendan Rodgers currently has young prospects in similar positions to the Birmingham starlet out on loan. Winger Jordon Ibe has scored five for Derby County thus far, and Divock Origi – who is yet to appear in a Reds shirt – has registered four in all competitions for Lille this term.
Do Liverpool need another teenage wonderkid? Or should Rodgers focus on recruiting more established strikers? Comment below.
