Liverpool lost 2-0 against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday
John Aldridge is among those who have reacted to the result
One ex-Reds man has hit out at Arne Slot after the ‘disaster’ in Paris
Several former Liverpool players have reacted to Liverpool 2-0 defeat against Paris Saint Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on 8 April.
Les Parisiens are 90 minutes at Anfield (Tuesday, 14 April) away from sealing their place in the Champions League semi-finals, as they look to defend their title.
Luis Enrique’s men have even had their weekend fixture against RC Lens postponed to allow them to recover and prepare for the trip to Merseyside.
The former attacker also claimed that he fears being cancelled if he is honest about his opinion about Slot.
Pennant posted on X (8 April): “If I speak, I’ll be in trouble. So the highlight and best thing about tonight was seeing Alexander Isak back fit and get a run out. I clapped, and I cheered. Enough said.”
In another tweet, the 43-year-old explained that Liverpool’s result against PSG is a ‘disaster’, while also aiming a direct attack on Slot for dismantling Jurgen Klopp’s hard work.
He wrote: “I was a Liverpool fan way before I became a pro footballer. As someone who genuinely cares and watches every single game, this is a disaster. Slot, you won the league last year with a style of play and DNA of Liverpool that Klopp built. This team is now close to unrecognisable.”

John Aldridge, meanwhile, took to X (formerly Twitter) to admit that he could not watch beyond the first half, fearing the Reds would concede four goals again.
He wrote: “I only saw the first half, folks, and I thought it’d be four.”
Stephen Warnock was also among those who were concerned by Liverpool’s performance and result in Paris, pointing out that they have lost 21 of their 59 games in all competitions since being knocked out of the Champions League by PSG last year.
He said on a broadcast on the BBC: “The gulf shouldn’t be as big as it is at the moment, and I think that’s the biggest concern for Liverpool fans.”
“Since they got knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield last season, they’ve lost 21 games in 59 games, that’s incredible. For a team of Liverpool’s quality – you’re talking about the Premier League champions from last season – it’s not good enough.”
‘Should have been 5-0’ – Steve Nicol on PSG v Liverpool
Steve Nicol believes Slot’s men were lucky that the Parisians did not take their chances and put five goals past the visitors, while also admitting that Ibrahima Konate was fortunate not to concede a penalty.
He went on to dismiss any chance of a remarkable comeback at Anfield next week, describing PSG’s playing style as ‘scary’.
Nicol said: “Get on a flight and get home before they change their mind, before VAR comes back and says, ‘we made a mistake’. You can’t complain, it should have been five, could have been six. They got outplayed. I heard the commentators saying, ‘This could be another Anfield night’. I think that’s a bit of a stretch.
“Unfortunately for him and Liverpool, they were playing against a side, who in terms of the movement of the front players, is absolutely scary. They will tear apart any defence when they are in that sort of mood. Luckily for Liverpool, they weren’t in the mood to take those chances, and that’s why Liverpool are, I guess you could somewhat say, still in the game, but if you are realistic, they are not.”
The calculations for Fenway Sports Group have rarely been this stark. As reigning Premier League champions turn their attention to Saturday’s visit of Fulham, the backdrop isn’t just about three points in the Premier League; it’s about the very viability of the current project.
Slot knows that the credit in the bank, built up during those early-season flurries, is depleting fast after a tactical submission in Paris that left many questioning the direction of travel.
While the hierarchy in Boston has traditionally preached patience, the looming second leg against PSG serves as a high-stakes referendum on the Dutchman’s tenure.
Should the Reds fail to summon the “Anfield factor” and bow out of Europe’s premier competition next week, the conversation within the boardroom will shift from seasonal objectives to more fundamental questions about the dugout.
For FSG, a season that promised a seamless transition is now teetering on a knife-edge, and the upcoming seven days feel like the final jury for a manager currently searching for answers.
