Liverpool could be facing a battle to sign Southampton full-back Nathaniel Clyne, according to Neil Jones of the Liverpool Echo.
Rival north-west club Manchester United are expected to renew their interest in the England international after another of their transfer targets, Barcelona’s Dani Alves, decided to stay with the Champions League winners.
Neil Jones also points out that Southampton have already been linked with a potential replacement for Clyne, with reports circulating that they are close to signing Portugal international Cedric Soares from Sporting Lisbon.
Liverpool had a £10m bid for Clyne rejected last month, with the Saints apparently holding out for an offer of £15m for the defender.
The delay in getting a deal done could work out well for United, who have the financial power to outbid Liverpool, plus they’ll offer the player something the Merseyside club can’t; Champions League football next season.
Liverpool are looking for a new right back following the departure of Glen Johnson, while Louis van Gaal had to use winger Antonio Valencia in that role for the majority of the season.
