Liverpool handed massive boost in race for 2026 FIFA World Cup breakout star

Liverpool are set to be active in the transfer market this summer as they aim to fine tune their squad this summer.

According to de Telegraaf via Liverpool Echo, Mexico sensation Gilberto Mora is set for a move to the Premier League after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, amid interest from Liverpool and Arsenal.

The 17-year-old has been one of the breakout stars of the tournament and recently became the second-youngest player in the competition’s history to start a knockout game after Pele.

And now, it appears as if his form hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Liverpool target Gilberto Mora set for Premier League move

Mora played a starring role for Club Tijuana last season with 10 goals and two assists across all competitions, which is an outrageous record for a 17-year-old.

He also played a big part in their 2025 Gold Cup victory and has taken his fine run of form into the World Cup as he continues to dazzle from an attacking midfield position.

According to the aforementioned report, he is set for a move to the Premier League, although the team hasn’t been revealed and neither has his potential price tag.

There are even quotes from a reputed Mexican journalist to add value to de Telegraaf’s transfer claims.

“In six months, during the winter transfer window, Gilberto Mora is going to take off. He’s going to be a Premier League player,” TNT Sports’ Mexico journalist Rodrigo Lara told AS Mexico.

“I can’t say which team…Today, after the match against Ecuador and after the England game, things are going to move forward for Gilberto Mora.

The information I have is that Gilberto Mora will play in the Premier League.”

It is important to note that Mora can only move to the Premier League after he turns 18, so this is very much one for the future if Liverpool get a deal over the line.

Thierry Henry wowed by Mora

Over the course of the tournament, Thierry Henry has made his feelings on Mora very clear.

“There he is, Mora. Let’s not forget this kid playing in midfield,” said the Arsenal icon.

“At times, controlling the game, understanding that sometimes he had to slow it down and not go to the counterattack so soon, and getting fouls.”

The 17-year-old clearly seems like a talent for the ages and Liverpool have positioned themselves to secure his signature.

Time will tell if he ends up at Anfield, but the Reds will have to fight other clubs across the continent to get this one over the line if Mora continues to light up the World Cup.
